Sherwood Street Fair

Yesterday night we went to the Sherwood Street Festival. It was your typical neighborhood street fair with music, food stands, rides, clowns, and face painting. What was surprising was the number of people that we actually knew. On our walk over, we saw our neighbors and their two children. And once we arrived, we frequently heard shouts of “Hi Erik! As many of Erik’s classmates and their families were in attendance. It was a nice opportunity to chat with parents outside of school.

Erik seemed to have a good time. He sat and attentively listened to his school’s jazz band without any prompting on our part. We’d heard them practicing in the mornings before school and hadn’t been overly impressed, but they really seemed to have gotten it together for this performance with quite an impressive play list: Louie Louie, The Girl from Ipanema (not sure on the spelling) to name a few and some strong solo performances on the sax and drums.

Erik was also fascinated by his friend’s tae kwon-do demonstration. Apparently kicks, quick arm jabs and shouts in Korean are quite appealing. However, just watching wasn’t enough, and we soon had to move along as not to injure any bystanders. All in all, it was quite similar to a street fair that you would see in Seattle except that the cotton candy is “fairy floss” and the ride operators addressed Erik as “mate”.
