Erik coming through the hatch in the Onsloe submarine
Since it was September and a bit cool, we didn't spend much time at the beach but still found plenty of things to do. We arrived Friday, took the ferry over to Manly and met our friends at school pickup. The boys spent the afternoon playing Lego and Zena and I had a chance to catch up over a cup of tea. Saturday morning, we went along with our friends' son, Dan to archery. At first Erik was hesitant to go, perhaps a bit afraid of not doing well, but after a few tips from the instructor, he was hitting the target most of the time, actually more often than me!
Since Saturday afternoon was the Australian Football League Grand Final, Mitchell had invited a troop of friends over to watch the game. However, Erik was keen to visit the submarine and battleship at the Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour again, so we hopped on the ferry and had the afternoon to ourselves, which worked out well as Erik has very little interest in AFL.The next day, our friends took us for a bush walk up to the Barrenjoey Lighthouse by Pittwater. The sky shone bright blue while the extreme windy whipped up the waves, giving the excursion a heightened feeling of adventure. The boys enjoyed rolling down and jumping off the dunes and worked up a hunger which was satisfied at a stop at one of the many pleasant little cafes found near the water in Sydney.
Monday, Mitchell took the day off school and accompanied us to Luna Park , Sydney's historic amusement park, for a day of rides and fairy floss (Aussie for cotton candy). All too soon, we were saying good bye and off to the airport. As much as I love Sydney and being by the water, a short trip was all we could take since Mark stayed home alone in Brisbane, saving his vacation days for our upcoming adventure to Lake Cootharaba with some sailing friends and our Heron dinghies.
