It's odd how the internet prompts don't reflect the impact of an event. The rumors began circulating in the early afternoon, even before the family had been notified. Once they had, the news of Queensland's favorite son, Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin's death was headline news and the main topic of conversation. Was it just an unfortunate accident or just fate catching up with him? Exactly how does one get stung in the chest by a stingray? How sad for his family! How close should one get to wild animals? It is all in the name of education or just exploitation? Our visit to Australia Zoo makes me think perhaps the later, but then again if it helps spread ecological awareness to audiences world wide, perhaps it's justified.
Since I wrote this posting, more details have come out, and it appears that it was just a freak accident. Links to constantly changing sites like newspapers don't seem to work very well but if you go to The Australian, you can get the Aussi take on the story.
Apparently they are planning a state funeral for him, an amazing honor.

The Baker Boys are in mourning. It is very sad news indeed. Glad we got up to the Zoo with you when we did (even though it was a little over the top for us!) ~PJ
