It's been a very cold April, apparently one of the coldest on record; however, I have boldly gone and planted the first seeds and starts in the new veggie garden. It was a fairly momentous occasion because of the enormous effort of getting the garden beds set up in the first place.
When we first bought the house, which is on a half acre, the upper portion of the property consisted of a flattened patch with pea gravel where the previous owners had a play set, next to that was a four foot mound of dirt that had been pushed aside to make the play area. Of course, this being the Northwest, the mound of dirt had become covered with a tangled mass of blackberry vines and, therefore, completely inaccessible. Luckily it was a cold winter and during one of the longer freezes, I was able to cut back all the blackberries. This was followed by a massive earth moving campaign that involve leveling the four foot mound and filling a three foot ravine. Next, when the area was relatively flat, we were able to construct our raised beds and fill them with a topsoil/compost mix which was delivered and dumped in a pile about 40 feet ways. About a hundred wheelbarrows later, we finally have a lovely vegetable garden with a a bit of a view!
