As we head into our last year in Australia, I am at the same time excited to be going "home" to the Northwest and sad to be leaving the wonderful country that has been "home" for the past three years. I miss family and friends, the beautiful evergreen forests, seasons (especially fall), and snow capped mountains, yet the endless summer, beautiful beaches, stately gums and rainforests will be as hard to say good bye to as the many friends we have made here in Brisbane.
Here are some recent pictures from both our "homes" so you can see the appeal of both places. Note the difference in clothing in the sailing pictures. While in the Northwest it's strictly for the cold, in Queensland people cover up mostly to protect themselves from the sun.
In fact, it's one of the "thorn in a bed of roses" situations that I found to be true in Australia. The weather is sunny and hot and while you could easily just sail in a swimsuit, you have to cover up for fear of skin cancer. Actually most people stay out of the sun in the middle of the day, especially in summer. It's a bit depressing, on a beautiful day, often we are just inside with the air conditioner on. It might as well be raining. The temperature is wonderful for outdoor living, but as soon as evening comes so do the mosquitoes. Therefore although we have a great outdoor dining area, we rarely linger outside past 6pm. Then, there are the beautiful beaches, just watch out for deadly undertows, sharks and jelly fish.
Maybe it is time for us to go home!
