Oxley United Football Club in Action and Working at the Fete

I suppose that the lack of postings over the past few weeks may be a sign of us settling in. Our weekends seem to fill themselves with obligations and outings in and around Brisbane creating the high notes in our song of life while weekday of school, work, and afternoon activities provide the steady rhythm: get up, depart with car pool (Mark), make breakfast, pack lunch, put on uniform, walk to school, chat with mums, volunteer or bike ride, laundry, shopping, pick up 3:00 pm, swimming Monday, soccer Tuesday, speech Wednesday, friends Thursday/Friday, play, dinner, reading, bath, bed.

Although the weekends start out with the familiar 8:30 am soccer game, the tune varies from week to week. One weekend it was Mark’s fishing trip. Another was the school “Fete” or fund raising carnival where I worked in the “Nearly New Clothing” stall while Mark did his best to keep track Erik and his friend Mitchell amongst the rides, games, used toy stall, and food stands. Two weekends ago, it was a soccer game out in Ipswich followed by a trip to the train works museum (very impressive). More recently, Mark and I participated in a 55k organized bike ride from South Bank in the center of Brisbane out to Manley on the coast. Erik stayed with Mitchell’s family, so we were both able to ride and even enjoy brunch together before picking him up and heading off to a Boeing family potluck, which seem to be the bi-monthly baseline in our life here providing a time to catch up, vent, and compare travel notes.

Now I feel we have an ordinary life here, some days more busy than others but each marked with flashes of discovery, appreciation, or at times frustration of living in a new place.
