After our trip to the Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, we headed north to the town of Coonabarrabran near Warrumbungle National Park, which is the site of an ancient shield volcano. The hard lava cores/plugs have resisted the forces of erosion and resulted in prominent rock formations, much like in the Glass House Mountains near Brisbane but in a much more concentrated fashion.
After checking in early at the motel, Mark, Erik and I went for a hike while mom explored the small country town of Coonabarrabran and the Crystal Kingdom, geological musuem and shop.
Since it was New Year's Eve, we splurged on a course dinner, which was delicious, but with such a full stomach, I had trouble staying wake and dozed off several times while Mark and Erik were watching a movie. We were even too tired to open up the champagne we'd bought and just had a bit of sparkling cider to ring in the New Year before going to bed. Unfortunately it was too overcast to do any star gazing which is normally a prime attraction in the area.
Now we are back in Brisbane for a week before heading up to the beach at Noosa. The weather has been a bit cooler, mid 80s F , so Mom has been enjoying that.
