Queensland Maritime Museum

The weekend before going to Mooloolaba we spent a lazy Sunday at South Bank visiting the Queensland Maritime Museum, one of Erik's favorite places in Brisbane and the topic of a recently completed school research project.


Here are some pictures and a copy of his report, which he wrote and typed (hunt and peck style) all by himself. It's amazing how much he has learned and grown since we moved here. I guess he's really not such a"little boy" anymore.

The Queensland Maritime Museum is a great place for kids and all people who like boats. It was opened in 1971 in the former location of the South Brisbane dry dock. The museum is in South Bank near the Goodwill Bridge. The museum includes both inside and outside exhibits, so it’s fun rain or sunshine.

The inside exhibits includes models, charts, objects and artifacts from the past. There are models of Navy ships, sailing ships, Egyptian and other ancient ships, cruise liners and even light houses. The objects and artifacts are mainly little cannons and cannon balls. The charts are from explorers who found Australia.

The outdoor exhibits are the H.M.A.S Diamantina river class frigate, H.M.A.S Forceful tug boat, and temporary exhibit of the Dyfken the Dutch sailing boat. (I don’t know if it is still there.) And there are cannons as well.

The H.M.A.S Dimantina was an Australian river class frigate. But it was decommissioned and used as a research vessel and it discovered Dimantina Deep, the deepest spot in the Indian Ocean. The Deep was named after the ship Dimantina. The Diamantina is a favorite exhibit in the Maritime Museum for kids because they can go inside the gun turret. The H.M.A.S Forceful was originally a ship for government service in the Middle East but the Australian navy got a hold of it and equipped it with an Oerlikon machine gun and a Vickers machine gun.

I think the maritime museum is a good place to go because it is fun to learn about the maritime history of Brisbane and Australia. The Queensland Maritime Museum is also open from 9.30 am till 4.30 pm. Daily. I chose to do my presentation about the Queensland Maritime Museum because maritime history is interesting and I would like other people to know about it.
