Sports Day

1st Place!

Apparently athletic endeavors are not limited to just Mark and I. Erik recently had his day in the sun (literally and figuratively). Last Friday was Sports Day at school, and Erik won first place in his sprint, was anchor on the winning relay, and was chosen to run as a fill in for a Grade 3 relay (even though he is only in Grade 2). In the long distance run (400 metres), he was 5th out of all the 30 some boys in Grade 2. It was nice to see him do well in something because even though he enjoys soccer and swimming, they have been somewhat of a challenge. However, most importantly, he had a great time, tried his best and enjoyed the day.

As you might have noticed from the pictures the kids are organized into "houses". Each is named after an early Sherwood headmaster (yes, a bit like in Harry Potter). Radcliffe is green, Boyland blue and Simpson yellow, so most of the kids and the parents were decked out in their house color. The kids actually buy house shirts, so they all match and are easy to identify. Before the races, they paint their faces and do house chants and cheers. Then all day they stay with their house group and do team activities and relays together. House points are hotly contested and the winning house gets bragging rights for another year, or at least until the swimming carnival in December.
