The beauty of Southeast Queensland never ceases to amaze me. Just two weeks ago we went to Lamington National Park and were impressed by the lush vegetation and lovely waterfalls. However, that was surpassed by what we saw this weekend at Springbrook National Park just a bit to the east of Lamington. Granted, we had the whole weekend to explore the different sections of the park. Also, perhaps, there was the element of surprise. We had really just wanted to go camping for the first time in Australia, so at the last minute I booked a site at a park that wasn't too far of a drive and that had a few hikes.
The only thing that didn't live up to our minimal expectations was the campground. It's a newly established area, and as you can see, it's sort of in an open meadow without a single shade tree around. Needless to say, we had to rig up something to protect us from the 85-90 degree sunshine, so Mark had a little project on his hands, but it all worked out well. We had a pleasant stay with some great hikes and a refreshing swim. We even saw a big carpet python but no red bellied blacks (venomous) snakes that are apparently native to the area.
