Today, we discovered yet another wonderful little corner of Queensland. We had heard about Lamington National Park and O'Reilly's Guesthouse yet hadn't found the time to drive down there. With the general intention of going on a hike this weekend, we had invited Erik's friend Mitchell to come along. I had mentioned to his mum that the rest of the family was welcome to join us but hadn't really gotten much of a response. Lamington was one of several possibilities, but to let her know where her son might be going, I sent the above link to Zena, To our pleasant surprise, they had decided at the last minute to come since they too had heard about Lamington. We all made the two hour trek south down to the park. Mitchell and Erik together in their car and their older daughter along with us to get away from the noisy boys. Luckily, none of the kids got car sick on the 20km section of winding road that would rival the Hana Highway for the number of turns and switchbacks.
We had a lovely bush walk on a 10 km circuit that led us past waterfalls and pools fringed by lush ferns, figs and palms. On rest stops, the adults were able to relax and sun ourselves on the flat rocks while the boys floated leaf boats down the creek and watched them tumble over the falls. It reminded me somewhat of Denny Creek Waterslide except with giant figs and box brush rather than firs.
Before heading home, we were even able to enjoy a pleasant meal at the cafe and take in the view of the valley and mountains in the distance.
