If you weren't aware, for the past four years there has been a severe drought in Southeast Queensland. Water reservoir levels were down to an alarming 30% of full. Needless to say, the thought of going out boating on nearly dry lakes hadn't been too high on our priority list, especially with all the lovely coastline.
However, after the rainiest May on record, the drought appears to be over. Since the dam levels are now up to 70% of full, it seemed like a good to time to check out their potential for water based adventures. Saturday morning, while Erik was at rock climbing, I headed into the city to rent a double recreational kayak for Mark and Erik. Then after lunch we headed west to Lake Wivenhoe at the head of the Brisbane river. The weather couldn't have been better, with afternoon sunshine and glassy flat water.
The lake (reservoir actually) is surprisingly large, after an hour of paddling I had barely made it beyond Logan Inlet to the main body of water. Erik and Mark checked out some other coves and the campground for a future visit with our sailboat while I paddled and took some photos of the cormorants that seemed to be drying their wings in the sun. Hopefully, we'll get back and explore a little more.
